My son cried and called, “Mama” when he tried to pee. Oh no! I suspect it’s a Urinary Tract Infection. So, I brought him to the hospital for a check up. It was confirmed.
The result:
Pus cells : 2 – 3 / hpf
Red Blood cells : 0 – 3 / hpf
His urine has blood and pus cells. Immediately, the doctor told us to confine him in the hospital. And so, we did. My son was inserted into the right hand with an IV. Then, through the IV, they gave him antibiotics and vitamins. The doctor told me that my son has Phimosis. Phimosis has caused his urinary tract infections. The doctor advised us for a circumcision. I told him he was only 2-years old, perhaps there is another way aside from circumcision. There is, by giving him antibiotics but UTI will return.
My mumblings:
As a mother’s intuition, I know this will come because I always see him drinking soft drinks and juice in sachets. I wish I can stop it. But, some people he’s around with, sometimes, will give him that drink. Knowing my son, he will not sip it but instead drink it to the last drop. For example: a staff nurse gave him a cup of Coke soft drink, whom he thought will will only take a sip. But, he was surprised when my son, drank it all, breathlessly. I told him, he’s like that whenever we give him a drink (carbonated and juice in sachets). That’s why, we don’t give him an 8oz. But instead, ¼ from his cup.
He used to drink a lot of water using his milk bottle. But, we change it in a cup with two handles on both sides. So, he can practice on how to drink like a big man.
What I learned:
I think I cannot prevent some people around him by giving my toddler soft drinks and juices. They meant no harm. Besides, his medical case is different from any toddler. The good side is we found out earlier the cause of the urinary tract infection.
